Grey’s Anatomy de-gays their show

In case you’ve missed the news (what were you doing, following the US elections?), Grey’s anatomy announced that they fired Brooke Smith. Not only that, but they’ve also decided to de-gay the new character played by Melissa George.

To make matters worse, Shonda Rhimes issued a statement about it all that is total BS:

“Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season.”

I guess that means there really is no more Callica…

I was pretty pissed off with how they portrayed the relationship between Callie and Erica, especially all the BS with Callie still sleeping with Sloan. But now that they’ve actually just gotten rid of the entire relationship I am lost for words.

WTF?
This is 2008 people. At least it is in the rest of the world.

I know there’s more important things I could be blogging about today…but I have always felt that what happens on television is a reflection of what is happening out in the real world.
