Comic of the month: Jane’s World

This month’s pick is an actual gay comic strip. Yep, there is such a thing…there are probably quite a few of them, but the one I am most familiar with, and also really really like, is Jane’s World.

Jane’s World is a comic strip by Paige Braddock that has been around for about a decade now. It is all about the main character Jane Wyatt, a young lesbian, and her every day life.

And with every day life I mean mainly the silly things she gets up to, her often complicated love life, her interactions with her family and friends.

Her family and friends mainly include her mother, her straight roommate Ethan, her best friend Dorothy (who she sometimes hooks up with), and Chelle (who has a background in special ops).

The special ops thing is a good excuse to sometimes have these weird storylines about criminals and break ins etc. They are a very entertaining read, but it is quite the contrast from Jane’s normal mundane existence.

For example, there was a hilarious storyline a few years back with Jane continuing to lie to her mother about being gay, while it turned out that her mother had known for years and was just waiting for Jane to come out.

What I like about Jane’s world is that it is a gay comic strip. Most of the characters are gay, and the comic deals with a lot of lesbian storylines and typical humour about being gay.

I heart how Jane is so politically incorrect, hates vegetarian restaurants and does not understand anything about women.
But beyond all the gay stuff, Jane is just a very likeable character. She is what some might call a likable loser. She is a big geek, and things do not always go her way. Still, she seems to enjoy life, or at least she likes to make fun of hers.
